Focus on health disparities: Screening and responding to SDOH

The COVID-19 pandemic highlighted the importance of considering social determinants of health (SDOH) and the role they can and should play in patient care. Indeed, the disparities in COVID-19 morbidity and mortality rates between different socioeconomic groups threw the issue into sharp relief in an unprecedented way.

But increased awareness of, and overall agreement about, the important role these metrics play in our health doesn’t mean that integrating them into patient care workflows is simple. Ensuring that providers can easily document SDOH – and that this notation is interoperable and accessible to an entire care team (and beyond) – is the next important task.
