What's in a variant?
The complexity of generating and using accurate COVID-19 data

In the time that has passed since the SARS-CoV-2 virus was discovered, a number of variants have been identified. Unfortunately, as new mutations like delta develop, the task of generating, managing, and sharing useful, high-quality data grows increasingly complex. Specifically, the creation of new clinical terms and nomenclature systems to describe the virus and its variants is complicating the task of ensuring proper coding and documentation of these new manifestations.

In this insight brief, we explore the tools needed to ensure accuracy when collecting data about the pandemic; the challenges of dealing with multiple variant terminologies; and the struggle to connect variant information with individual patient records.
